Peter:
This is a apparently a shop for tourists. The parking lot was packed with out-of-town license plates. However, this shop does not stack up to the better udon shops around town. The building is lovely, dark, old, quaint, but the udon is below average. All in all, there's nothing remarkable about Hanaya, and I probably won't return.
Very slow service was a major drawback. Most udon shops serve us in around five minutes (they're built for speed). At Hanaya, it was more than fifteen. Also, the menu was surprisingly sparse--no meat, no tempura, no specials. It was a little expensive, all in all. Positives include fairly large portions, a fairly good udon noodle, and a spicy goma karashi.
Udon Chewiness: 6
Overall: 5 , I can't quite recommend it. Despite good noodles and karashi, it just wasn't up-to-par with most places in town.
