Reviews & Opinions

Peter:

I liked this shop a lot. The udon was above average, but not outstanding. I was dazed by the menu, and ended up ordering two bowls of udon--a niku tsuke, and a special--both as small size, which was a reasonable 750yen total. The special was fabulous, if a little sweet. The niku tsuke was fine, but plain, in the end. As I write this two days after my visit, the Special beckons me to return. The egg, inari, and meat were very flavorful, and worth returning for.

Udon Chewiness: 6
Overall: 7 , both my bowls were tasty, the Special is really interesting

Jason:

Normally I stick to the cold noodles when I go to a new udon place, but the Ougi-ya special looked too good to resist. Featuring half a boiled egg, tasty marinated meat, wakame seaweed, thinly sliced gobou, onions, veggies, and a thick block of fried tofu over udon in a miso based soup, this was one of the heartiest bowls of udon I've had. (I didn't opt for the large, either!) Ougi-ya has an extensive menu with several varieties of udon, including curry udon and another special, yumori udon. They'll fry up wonderful potato croquettes, and soft drinks and alcohol are also available. All the toppings from the special can be added to any bowl of udon seperately for 50 yen apiece. It also offers three sizes of udon, which is a rarity. The noodles were pretty average, but the meat had more flavor than at other shops, and it was very good. If I come back I will try some kind of niku udon. The unique miso/karashi blend is also worth mentioning. It's a bright crimson in color, and was very spicy. Ougi-ya overcomes plain noodles with good toppings and a wide selection of varieties. The awful flourescent lighting, rumbling train that passed by twice during my visit, and the two big fish tanks in the entrance only added to the yoshida-udon feel. 7.5/10
